There is a notion that a puppet is a kind of playful instrument---- a magical tool under the command of a blithe and supple puppeteer. But, a puppet is no such thing. The truth is, a puppet comes just as she happened to be made -- full of faults and virtues. In this, the puppet-maker is no more the master of the puppet than is the puppeteer.
It is the job of the puppeteer’s to determine what the puppet does well and create a working grammar based on the puppet’s his best moves and actions. With this grammar as a guide, we have to learn how to capitalize on what the puppet gives us and quit trying to tell the puppet what to do!
